Your skin wants you to eat less sugar

We are quickly approaching Thanksgiving here in the United States and I’d like to give you a gentle loving reminder to minimize the amount of sugar that you are consuming.  Thanksgiving typically marks the beginning of the Christmas season and with that comes all the holiday treats loaded with SUGAR.

We have a rule in our house, which can be more challenging with 3 little girls under the age of 9.  We try and limit our treats to one a day.  So if they have had treats or sweets at school, then no treats later.  If they have had a sugary breakfast like the occasional donut or even pancakes, no treats later. This even applies to having soda or hot chocolate.  It is still sugar. This teaches my littles to think about the amount of sugar or treats they are consuming and how often. They often will even ask, “If I have this, does it count as my treat for the day?”

So how can we minimize sugar in our lives especially around the holidays?  We could use the same rule of having one treat a day.  Now remember, there is sugar in so many things that we eat or drink.  So instead of having a soda reach for a sparkling water.  Instead of having a sugary breakfast of pancakes and syrup, have eggs.  Omitting sweetener in our tea or coffee will help also. If I do decide to have a treat I personally wait to have mine until my littles are in bed.  On occasion my husband and I will split a package of  Justin’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups and it is just the right amount of sugar, chocolate and peanut butter.

Omitting sugar is simple and easy, although it can take our taste buds a while to adjust. Our bodies and our skin will thank us!  Sugar causes inflammation and that inflammation causes enzymes that break down collagen and elastin in our cells. Plus all the other effects that go with eating sugar: cravings, weight gain, headaches and the harmful effect on the insulin.

Take a moment to plan and think about what you are putting into your body.  Limit your sugar throughout the day then you can enjoy your treat of having a slice of your Grandma’s yummy pumpkin pie.  Savor it as you chew and enjoy your one treat of the day.
